Prevention Education
The mission of the Prevention Education Department is to encourage local school districts to provide an umbrella of comprehensive health education to all students with a youth development focus that respects, honors and supports young people. Comprehensive programs should include health curriculum, information on tobacco, alcohol and other drugs, violence and hate-motivated behavior, sex education, school safety (physical and emotional), guest speakers, counseling, student assistance programs, mentoring, and recreational opportunities. These programs may vary from district to district depending on funding and the needs of local youth and families. Carol Ciraulo is the Prevention Education Coordinator, 707-467-5152 Services Provided The Prevention Education Department can be seen as a resource that assists local school districts and community-based organizations in applying for for a wide variety of local, state, and federal Prevention funding such as TUPE (Tobacco Use Prevention Education), SDFSC (Safe and Drug Free Schools and Communities), HIV/AIDS, Safe Schools and Violence Prevention, 21st Century Learning and After-School Programs. The Prevention Education Department provides assistance in completing Annual Reports and Consolidated Applications required by the California Department of Education. We also assist districts with the process of annually updating LEAP (Local Education Achievement Plans) and preparing for Categorical Program Monitoring (CPM). We support local schools directly with assitance in the collection of data. This includes guidance during the planning and administration of the California Healthy Kids Survey. A variety of local and regional trainings and workshops are offered throughout the year for school staff, youth, and the community.
